Can it run a decent amount of plug-in "instances"? I could get ten of the "full power" UA 1176's going, whereas the UAD-1 might get four running. On the other hand, the UAD-2 SOLO/Laptop simply plugs into the slot with no cables, even when your laptop is powered up, and UA says it has three times the power of the older unit.

The UAD did sound great, and I almost became addicted to the Precision Limiter at one point, but sometimes three or four open plug-ins would be all I could use -making it occasionally not worth the setup hassle.

It was nice to get access to UA's (always growing) collection of plug-ins, but I have to admit that dealing with the Xpander box (burning hot), a pesky wall wart and cables was such a pain I would usually skip using my UAD-1 and use Pro Tools' meager collection of plug-ins. A while back I got a good deal on one of the UAD-Xpander/UAD-1 rigs that basically dropped a UAD-1 card in a little powered box and connected to my laptop via an ExpressCard cable. Usually these are PCI-based cards installed inside a computer (they handle the DSP for authorized plug-ins), but in the case of the SOLO/Laptop the card has been reduced to a tiny bugger that slips into the ExpressCard slot of a laptop (for those that have this slot, check before buying one). I haven't run into any issues at all yet.The UAD systems by Universal Audio have been host to some of the best plug-ins available (in VST, AU, RTAS) for a number of years now, via their "Powered Plug-In" cards. i usually am not mixing huge number of tracks though.

I've never heard a fan run on the machine yet and i run sessions with virtual instruments and lots of plug ins. My IMac has the I5 processor and AMD gpu. So yeah, I do everything else still on PC. I'm typing to you now on a Microsoft surface pro 3 with I7 processor. My other machine I used to have the Apollo connected to for recording is an I7 4770K quad core with an Nvidia 780TI gpu. at home, i built my baby with an I7 5960X octo core and Nvidia GTX 980 sli rig. So for my graphic work, I use a 24 core hp workstation beast at work.

also, the uad console 2.0 is designed to take full advantage of the 5K retina display. But I have to admit, after using it for the few months I've had it, it really is beautiful. I really could care less about the huge resolution display. That is the primary reason I chose the 5k IMac. The 5K IMac actually is one of just a few Macs that are 100% supported by uad with Thunderbolt 2 connectivity. I haven't run into any issues at all yet. I've heard really good things about the ocean way plugin too.Ĭlick to expand. My IMac has the I5 processor and AMD gpu. the RMX16 seems fantastic, I'll have to grab that at some point. I'm sure I'll grab the lexicon 224xl at some point but it's ground that Valhalla vintage covers extremely well. they may or may not sound exact but they'd other do the job or they don't. I'm really waiting for the slate subscription to get VMR and tbh the ones I already have are fine for me. I've held off the uad 1176's as I have a million on my computer already, as well as their old legacy version. they're smart but it just comes with the teritory, it's what keeps them in business so fair play to them. it's just a psychological thing so you think you're getting a great deal. The plugins do seem expensive but it's just UA's marketing - there's always sales, offers and vouchers/coupons they stick in your account so no one ever pays full price unless they're stuck. I got my (old) Apollo recently and I'm really happy with it. being able to track through them with no latency and on a high buffer really is awesome. The uad are plugs are on the whole fantastic but there are native plugins on the same level. fine for messing around with but not fit for proper use IMO. for what it may have in sound, it completely lacks in functionality and reliability.

I used nebula years ago on windows and it was a frightening experience, no way am I considering that clunky experimental bollocks for serious work, no matter how good it sounds.
